We started picking lettuce leaves from our cold frame a couple of weeks ago, about April 14. We planted mid-March. The Australian Yellow, Forellenschus, and Speckled  seemed to grow fastest. We are now getting pickings from the Yugoslavian Red. I didn’t get a very uniform stand of lettuce in the cold frame, not sure why, but we are picking plenty for two of us to eat salads at every meal, except breakf ast, yet :-)  .

I planted Buttercrunch and Sunset in a garden bed at the end of March and they are starting to grow pretty well. They are touted as more heat resistant.

One problem we have had this last month or so, believe it or not, is it has been dry, and we have to water regularly. We had a hot spell too, but so far it has not been detrimental to the lettuce. This weekend we seem to be moving into a more seasonal spring pattern, with rain predicted, so hopefully we won’t have to water for a while.
